About Menu Anxiety
Menu Anxiety is a chronic condition. It stems from a lifelong desire to cook and eat in a way that brings joy to the lives and mouths of all involved. Through what I do and eat, I aim to support regenerative farms that promote biodiversity and producers and companies with transparent supply chains and fair labor practices. I want to dine at restaurants where menus are anxiety-provoking, chefs challenge the status quo, and experiences stick in my memory.
I live in New York City and love to learn about new cuisines and cultures (in the city and abroad), dine at the best restaurants, and learn as much as I can from economists, chefs, journalists, and entrepreneurs with a vision in the food space. I eat and cook with thought and care towards seasonality and sustainability; and with healthy doses of frivolity, experimentation, and decadence. Anxiety provoking, I know.
My anxiety over the boundless choices nature provides us and the choices we make to honor it isn’t a crippling food-phobic affliction; it is a joyful path lined with wild blueberries and fig trees and bottarga (hey, a girl can dream).
The idea of Menu Anxiety is to demystify, translate, edit, elucidate, define, dive deep, critique, and comment on menus and menu items (& other food situations) which I find to be most anxiety provoking.
About Me
I am a food business professional in New York City with diverse experiences ranging from managing James Beard award winning restaurants, opening restaurants, programming and content creation at food media and culinary education non-profits, and client-facing operations and business development at a travel start up—where I am the resident Italy expert.
I recently received my master’s degree in Food Studies from New York University where I focused my education in economics, journalism, and food business courses. For my culminating research applications I studied the effects of commodification of an ancient fish sauce from a tiny town in Southern Italy. To conduct my research, I received a research grant and worked on the Amalfi Coast for three months, teaching cooking classes and catering private dinners.
Prior to graduate school, I lived in New Orleans for eight years. I miss the food, music, people, festivals, weather, and plants, animals, and trees every day. Minus hurricanes and killer ‘pillars.
